Capistrello (AQ) - Abruzzo

Capistrello land of traditions, culture, Roman art and unspoilt landscapes. This town of Valle Roveto, which baptizes the river of Liri and enhances the banks, is a small jewel immersed in the thick vegetation of the valley. It contains an ancient heart, marked by the charm of the old historic village, the integral soul of a community strongly linked to its roots.

When you arrive in the village, you will notice the almost exclusive relationship with nature. And not only for the constancy with which citizens inhabit the mountain capistrellana, but also for the attitude of the same administration and city associations to organize activities focused on environmental heritage.

The Renga Plateau dominates and embraces the town and the collective spirit. A breathtaking scenery at about 1360 meters above sea level, on the border with the Natural Park of the Simbruini Laziali. A beautiful, versatile expanse, scene of romantic getaways and children’s green park. The Renga is inhabited by the capistrellana community all year round. It’s an oasis where you can find inspiration, listen to the silence, enjoy the company of friends. It is at the same time a meeting place for athletes both in summer and in winter, lending itself with elegance to trekking and mountain walks, but also to cross-country skiing when covered with snow.

Then there is the timeless charm of Claudius' Emissary. Key engineering construction of technique and Roman inspiration that allowed the drying up of Lake Fucino. One of the most evocative hydraulic works in the world, the Emissary is the ultimate component of a complex system inside Mount Salviano, consisting of a long crossing channel, six tunnels and thirty-two wells. The water from the outlet poured into the course of the Liri, allowing the drainage of the Marsican reservoir. Today it can be admired from the bank of the river, as a deep gorge whose strategic role gives it pathos and admiration. And that’s not all. Capistrello boasts in fact the presence of a second engineering work of absolute strategic merit, the Helical Gallery, designed in the second part of 1800 by the engineer Ernesto Mangiarotti, to solve the problems that arose during the construction of the Roccasecca-Avezzano railway line. The stretch between the hamlet of Pescocanale and Capistrello turned out to be particularly inaccessible due to the considerable natural difference in altitude. Mangiarotti then hypothesized a system of seven tunnels, none of which exceeds the length of 1.5 km, with a helical trend to "U". The entire historical, cultural and natural heritage of Capistrello is made the subject of the route traced by the Great Way of the Brigantes, an important cultural event, inspired by the principle of the enhancement of the environmental heritage, which is part of the institutional initiatives that help the promotion of this land and facilitate its objective of growth. The route leads the walkers in the footsteps of brigandage, from Sante Marie to Potenza, crossing five regions.

The Municipality of Capistrello is therefore located within a circuit that feeds the promotion of slow tourism, that is the "made on foot", sustainable and respectful of the territory. The Briganti Way is therefore one of the most important events in the tourist-promotional context of the country, whose history is strongly linked to the role played by the mountains.

The traveller who visits Capistrello is able to appreciate also the strong bond, never lost, of the country with history. The community has never forgotten the wounds inflicted and the serious losses suffered in the course of historical events. First of all the episode of the massacre of 33 citizens barbarously killed by German fury during the Nazi occupation. The country, for their names overwhelmed by history and for their faces erased from existence with a pit that became common coffin, received in 2005 the Gold Medal for Civil Merit awarded by the President of the Republic Carlo Azeglio Ciampi, for being the subject "of the blind and brutal retaliation of the retreating German troops"
