Collarmele (AQ) - Abruzzo

Located at the gates of the Sirente Velino Regional Park, Collarmele rises in a context of great landscape interest..

Its location on the ancient Tiburtine consular artery has made the center of strategic importance since the Roman period, when it was known with the toponym of Cerfennia, as it appears from the famous Tabula Peutingeriana. The formation of today’s town started from the centralization of villas and houses of the surrounding area, a process that presumably ended in the second half of the fifteenth century, in parallel with the other fortified centers of the Marsica.

The old town, partially destroyed by the earthquake of 1915, still retains valuable elements of the historical-architectural heritage of the ancient town. Above all, the fourteenth-century tower commissioned by the Counts of Celano - inscribed in a more articulated system of Marsican fortifications - and the church of the Madonna delle Grazie, that with its frescoes and polychrome majolica facade is one of the most iconic Renaissance religious buildings in the Abruzzo area. The proximity of the southern side of the Sirente makes the town an ideal destination for hikers, who have the opportunity to walk to a large number of peaks up to 2000 meters high, guided by the official park signs.

For lovers of mountain biking, the country roads gravitating around the town are a suggestive circuit already known to fans of the discipline from all over the peninsula for the famous annual event of the "Sentiero dei Lupi". From 2021, the country promotes the organization of the "Festival of young people of the Apennines", next to the third edition of 2023, which aims to raise public awareness about the depopulation of countries through the annual meeting of youth delegations from all over Italy in "Piazza dell'Orologio".
