Typical Abruzzo village, reachable by a steep climb. It is located in a beautiful natural amphitheater, surrounded by lush mountains full of woods. Opi still retains the characteristics of an ancient medieval village, unique for its location and appearance of great archaeological interest. The human presence in the territory of Opi has remote origins, as evidenced by the remains of a fortified center in the place where the current town stands, the many archaeological finds found in the Necropolis of Val Fondillo and the remains of a probable temple in the localities "Casali" and "Fonte delle Lecina".
In the historic center stands the seventeenth-century Baronial Palace, which houses the Town Hall and the tourist association Pro Loco di Opi. Some theories claim that its name derives from an ancient sanctuary of the people of Marsi dedicated to Opi, wife of Saturn and Goddess of abundance, which once stood on the area. Others claim that the same derives from the Latin term "oppidum", that is "fortified city", because the village was protected by a perimeter of houses leaning against each other on the edge of the rocks, almost forming a wall. It was the Municipality of Opi, one of the most evocative of the Park, which on 2 October 1921 granted 500 hectares of the Costa Camosciara to the Federation Pro Montibus et Silvis for the establishment of the first protected area of Italy, initial nucleus of the National Park of Abruzzo, located in the upper Val Fondillo, which later became one of the most famous and popular valleys.
Exceptional natural and cultural heritage of Opi is the Val Fondillo where we find the Faggete Vetuste (Cacciagrande) recognized World Heritage by UNESCO in 2017; Opi also winds the Regio Tratturo that starts from nearby Pescasseroli and arrives in Candela (FG)also recognized as Intangible Heritage of Humanity. Opi, having an extensive network of trails, is a popular tourist destination ideal for lovers of nature and sport. In addition, the numerous events that occur throughout the year fully recall the historical - cultural values of the borough.
