San Vincenzo Valle Roveto (AQ) - Abruzzo

San Vincenzo middle ground. It marks the tear between the dialectal influences of the old Terra di Lavoro and the great Marsica. It overlooks the view on both sides of the Liri and has, in addition to the capital, seven hamlets. Morrea, San Vincenzo Vecchio, Santa Restituta, Roccavivi, San Giovanni Vecchio, San Giovanni Nuovo, Castronovo. A demographic, cultural and landscape abundance that makes this particular section of the Roveto Valley a meeting of many truths, each one unique and different, yet all born under the same sky.

History, people, culture, landscapes and folklore have made this town a small jewel of Abruzzo nestled in the Liri Valley. Here the journey is lost among endless itineraries and unexpected views. At the end of the journey the traveller will no longer be the same. Along the way it will become part of the surrounding nature, the result of an experiential tourism that the inhabitants of San Vincenzo Valle Roveto have at heart to promote and support.

In May 2021, from the synergy between Pro Loco and Associations of the Municipality, was born in San Vincenzo Valle Roveto the Cooperativa di Comunità Terrenostre, which today has twenty-four founders and over two hundred members. The newborn Cooperative aims to develop experiential tourism and imagines a tourist who becomes part of the village, the unspoilt nature, which is immersed in the rhythms and activities of the territory, living simple but extraordinary experiences. A tourist who puts himself at stake in first person, choosing between hiking activities of varying difficulty and type, who delights with tastings of products and dishes typical of the area and who indulges in experiences of environmental well-being. A rewarding regenerating walk will begin in the hamlet of Santa Restituta.

After admiring the ancient fresco of the Lombard school, preserved in the church of the village, tourists can go up the source of Tasso to enjoy the view from the viewpoint of the village of Morrea, where stand the wonderful remains of the Piccolomini Castle. Crossing the ancient mule track you will arrive at the hermitage of the Madonna del Romitorio, once home of the Franciscan friars. From there continue the walk accompanied by the picturesque setting of Mount Pizzo Deta. Going down to the valley, crossing the villages of San Vincenzo Vecchio and San Giovanni Nuovo, it will arrive at the old and new mills, center of history and tradition, in which to share the taste of the green gold of the valley, son of the fields and the efforts of the farmers. During the journey, in the village of San Giovanni Vecchio, the ancient taste of oil will leave room for the mystical experience of visiting the Church that houses the relics of San Diodato. On the opposite bank of Liri, tourists will reach the hermitage of Roccavecchia, a place of worship of the Madonna delle Grazie and memory of an ancient village gone lost that now lives in the town of Roccavivi.

In San Vincenzo Nuovo, however, the traveller will rediscover the art of ancient crafts, in particular the processing of wicker, excellence of this land carried out by the masters of the old tradition. Finally, continuing the path you will arrive at the Sentiero dei Fossi, emerged naturally in the territory of Castronovo, The village is still crossed by one of the branches of the Rio Sonno canal. Passable in all seasons of the year, the path is almost entirely in the shade and the water is not missing even in the driest seasons. The more experienced trekkists can climb the ditch of the waterfall until late spring. Along the water course, past a vertical wall with a jump of about seven meters, you find yourself on a series of natural pools unique in their kind for the extraordinary visual impact. Clear water, unspoilt nature: walking to the rhythm of the flowing water is priceless. Cross the paths that have seen the efforts of the people of the past, breathe the scents of silent woods, as if it were the last breath of life. This is the sense of discovery, the sense of travel.

In San Vincenzo Valle Roveto There are no famous monuments, but atmospheres and traditions that must be safeguarded and increasingly valued. An intangible cultural heritage consisting of poor food, genuine ingredients and a condiment of excellence, extra virgin olive oil, but also rituals, festivals and traditional crafts. The autochthonous and organic cultivation of olive groves, the enormous progress, in the quality and quantity of production, made in the last twenty years, has characterized and made known San Vincenzo Valle Roveto and allowed Monicalla, the variety of olive trees typical and exclusive of the territory, to be one of the varieties of olive trees included in the National Presidium of Italian extra virgin olive oil and our oil to boast the coveted recognition promoted by Slow Food.
