Scurcola Marsicana (AQ) - Abruzzo

The authentic village of Scurcola Marsicana is located on one side beyond the western edge of Fucino, wonderful plateau of Marsica, and on the other at the foot of Monte S. Nicola..

It extends over a vast area of over 700 meters above sea level, a position from which dominates the plain of Campi Palentini that, in ancient times, formed a single lake with the Fucino. Characterized by a mild climate and a mountainous landscape of rare beauty, Scurcola is a popular destination for travelers who want to visit one of the most beautiful and spectacular corners of Abruzzo.

The findings of a village dating back to the Iron Age and located on Mount S. Nicola, testify to the ancient origins of Scurcola Marsicana. The name of the village derives from the Lombard word "skulk", guard post. The first inhabited nucleus was created by the citizens of Alba Fucens, who moved to the top of the mountain following the destruction of their city by Charles of Anjou. The present village was created only after the construction of the church of S. Maria della Vittoria and the adjoining Cistercian monastery. This abbey became so important that it obtained feudal rights over all the surrounding territory. Around the sixteenth century, however, following the abandonment of the monastery by the Cistercian monks, Scurcola passed under the control of the Colonna, and lost some of its prestige. Among the historical events that have marked the history of the village stands out the terrible carnage perpetrated by the Piedmontese in the Church of the Souls, in the middle of 1800.
