Bisaccia, a town in the province of Avellino, is a village that today has 3,650 inhabitants. It has medieval origins, although archaeological excavations have revealed that it was already inhabited in the ninth century B.C. The Ducal Castle, one of the best preserved fortified sites in southern Italy, which in the course of history has hosted the Lombards, Frederick II, Torquato Tasso, invited by Giovan Battista Manso, and around the middle of 1800, Francesco De Sanctis, passing through during his electoral journey, which on the occasion called our village "Bisaccia la Gentile"; The Archaeological Civic Museum, of regional interest, located inside the Ducal Castle, has over 800 finds, among which the Tomb 66 or Tomb of the Princess; The Cathedral Church of the Nativity of Mary, in Piazza Duomo, built initially by the Normans, over the centuries was destroyed by seismic events and rebuilt in 1747; The Church of S. Maria del Carmine, also known as the Church of the Virgin of Carmel, built in the seventeenth century, precisely in 1667, in front of the square of the same name, gives the opportunity to admire on its portal a majolica depicting the Madonna del Carmine;
The Church of Sant'Antonio da Padova, patron saint of the town, stands on the square in front of it, dedicated to the saint, from which you can admire a beautiful view and on which there is a beautiful lime tree centuries. Among the houses of the ancient village, among alleys and picturesque views, there is the hotel owned by the municipality. There are also four magnificent accommodation facilities with 80 beds in total that allow you to accommodate various types of tourism. The village has also been chosen by the Foundation "System Irpinia", created by the Province of Avellino for the cultural and tourist promotion of Irpinia, as the seat of District 22 for the cultural and tourist revival of the territory. Bisaccia is an active part of the municipalities signatories of the Memorandum of Understanding of the Pilot Area "Alta Irpinia" with which the identification of the development strategy of the territory is launched. With the protocol a decisional organism is constituted, called "City of the High Irpinia", to which it is entrusted the unitary representation of the planning area in confronts of the Campania Region and the National Committee for the Inner Areas. Thanks to the presence of the numerous cultural attractions mentioned above and the beauty of the village, Bisaccia counts about 20,000 annual tourists. The Municipality of Bisaccia is included in two tourist itineraries and very important paths, the Via Francigena and the Regina Viarum (Appia).
