Sanctuary and Basilica of San Gerardo Maiella
One of the most famous places of worship in the province of Avellino.

The Basilica of San Gerardo was rebuilt and enlarged on its original site in several stages. After the Canonization of 1904, the flow of pilgrims grew to the point that the enlargement of the temple in honor of St. Gerard became the main urgency. On 16 October 1913 began the works of extension that ended on 31 August 1929 with the consecration of the same by the Archbishop of Naples, Card. Alessio Ascalesi. On 18 February 1930, Pope Pius XI granted the title of Minor Basilica.

The diocesan documents handed down to us that the facade of the Basilica was in neo-classical style and built with Pescopagano stone with the inside with a Latin cross. It had three naves to double system of arches and the vault introduced stuccoes loaded of gold with ornamental paintings. The stained glass windows reproduced episodes of the life of the saint. In 1931 the statue of the "Materdomini" was crowned with gold diadem by the Vatican Chapter. All this wealth of art and devotion was destroyed by the terrible earthquake of November 23, 1980.Twenty years later, on April 30, 2000, during the Great Jubilee, it was returned to the cult of the Basilica.

Not richer than many friezes and frescoes has been rebuilt on the same plan of the previous resulting a little longer as it was incorporated the entrance porch. Another variation is the location of the tomb of the Saint that is no longer in the altar of the right aisle, where the statue of St. Gerard remained, but in the center of the church behind a beautiful marble high relief. where you can see the new urn in crystal, silver and mother of pearl, which contains the body of Saint Gerard.

Very impressive is the hall of the bows, one of the most visited places of the Sanctuary of San Gerardo Maiella, whose walls and ceiling are covered with thousands of pink and blue bows that mothers have donated, over the years, to the Saint in thanksgiving, for difficulties of various kinds overcome during motherhood. Thousands of birth bows with pictures of children, left by pilgrims in honor of Saint Gerardo Maiella.
