Castelvetere sul calore has an area of 17 Km2 and is about 75 km from Naples. It is located 750 meters above sea level, is part of the Regional Park of Monti Picentini and is located on the slopes of Mount Tuoro. Downstream it is crossed by the river Calore Irpino. The demographic development of the municipality has had a decrease since the 70s with a population that is equal to 1532 inhabitants at 31/12/2020.
Home to many famous people such as Vincenzo Leone, Aurelio De laurentiis, the Risi and Preziosi families, land of artists, delights, artisans, land of farmers, rich in culture, history and traditions, Torella dei Lombardi is one of the most suggestive medieval villages of Alta Irpinia.
The village develops along the slopes on which stands a castle of Lombard origin, THE CASTLE RUSPOLI - CANDRIANO, (X- XII century) which renovated in the Norman-Swabian period (XII-XIII century) has undergone extensive restructuring in the years to come. In the seventeenth century was made the transformation into a palace house, by the Caracciolo family.
The castle, destroyed by the earthquake of 23 November 1980, has been rebuilt and is currently the seat of the Town Hall and a MUSEUM ANTIQUARIUM ARCHAEOLOGICAL. Archaeological research has allowed the discovery of numerous ceramic kitchenware and tableware preserved in the castle museum. In the large entrance courtyard, which allows access to the fortress, you can admire three large stone coats of arms, belonged to the noble families who lived there.
Of the history of the village there is ample trace, as well as precious memories, such as the triptych of the Madonna delle Grazie, with on the sides S. Giovanni Battista and S. Giovanni Evangelista, preserved in the Sanctuary; precious and artistic portals of 1300, paintings of the school of Luca Giordano; a statue of S. Antonio del Cifariello of Naples, stone tabernacles of 1300 with bas-reliefs of the Madonna. Very important is the cemetery chapel, one of the oldest in Italy, built before the Edict of Saint Cloud. The church of San Michele where in very distant times a hermit found refuge and from which you can see all the surrounding landscape, given its enormous height. Downstream from the village, interesting is the river area of Calore, flanked by a forest crossed by the railway Avellino-Rocchetta S. Antonio (now a historic railway for tourism), which in Castelvetere sul Calore has a station, this area is particularly suited to viticulture, Castelvetere is part of the Taurasi area, where the wines are produced: Irpinia DOC Aglianico, Irpinia DOC Rosso, Taurasi and Taurasi Riserva DOCG, one of the four DOCG Campani.
