Mountain municipality that rises to almost 1000 meters in height and is located in the middle of high Irpinia between the valleys of the rivers Ufita, which arises from the plateau of Formicoso (987 meters) and Ofanto. South of the town, Mount Acereto or Cerreto (1030 meters above sea level) seems to face the Guard with a wonderful view.
The center of the village is situated on a high altitude while the remaining territory extends over hilly hills covered with agricultural fields, maple and chestnut woods and rural settlements. Of great tourist interest in addition to the beauty of the natural heritage, including fountains, there are the old town with its narrow streets and steps, houses with stone portals, the monumental building of the Chiesa Madre di S. Maria delle Grazie built in medieval times and the church of S.Maria dei Manganelli.
The origin of the toponym "Guardia", from the Germanic "wart" (custody, rock, sentry), alludes to its geographical position with respect to the surrounding territory, while the second toponym "Lombardi" refers to the center of settlement of the Lombards between 595 and 600 A.D. Of great historical importance there is to remember : the tangible sign of the romanization of the Guardiesi territories with the Appian Way that had two variants: the mountain director Formicoso (ss 303), frequented in summer, and a valley path (Ufita valley) practiced in winter; the passage and the stop of Pope Leo IX (1053-54) who with his army went to fight the Normans towards Puglia, elected Patron by the Guardiese people at his death and the long stay of Prince Manfredi (son of Frederick second (1254-1255).
