Montemarano (AV) - Campania

Montemarano, ancient village, stretched out on a boundless horizon, (called, in fact, "Sannio nel Sannio". Cfr. A. Sena, Chronological History of the City of Montemarano, Naples 1846, p.12), bishop’s seat until 1818, enjoys a special identity and rather particular and recognizable from the point of view of landscape.

Everything dates back to the Samnite and Italian civilizations, when the ancient Sannio became the protagonist in the area. This is how the customs of Montemarano were described for the first time. The ancient origin of Montemarano is demonstrated by the names of some districts. Some authors attribute the foundation of Montemarano to the Irpinian leader Mario Egnazio. Several authors, however, have searched for the etymology of the name Montemarano in the clash of Sannio with Rome, stating that this is what gave the name to the town. Montemarano boasts an inexhaustible mine of sacred vestments of the highest evocative value, whose colors and embroideries take on a great symbolic significance.
