Torella dei Lombardi (AV) - Campania

"Fill your mind with such thoughts, for a rough and difficult journey, Pervenimmo in Torella, village beautifully manufactured on top of a hill. The wholesome air that is breathed there, the amenity of the fields that surround it, the copy of the tasty fruits, waves must be provided, and more the cordial reverence of the inhabitants towards the foreigners, make it a place of delight and pleasure..." Pietro Paolo Parzanese of Torella in his "JOURNEY TO BAGNUOLO, from 8 to 14 August 1835 ".

Home to many famous people such as Vincenzo Leone, Aurelio De laurentiis, the Risi and Preziosi families, land of artists, delights, artisans, land of farmers, rich in culture, history and traditions, Torella dei Lombardi is one of the most suggestive medieval villages of Alta Irpinia.

The village develops along the slopes on which stands a castle of Lombard origin, THE CASTLE RUSPOLI - CANDRIANO, (X- XII century) which renovated in the Norman-Swabian period (XII-XIII century) has undergone extensive restructuring in the years to come. In the seventeenth century was made the transformation into a palace house, by the Caracciolo family.

The castle, destroyed by the earthquake of 23 November 1980, has been rebuilt and is currently the seat of the Town Hall and a MUSEUM ANTIQUARIUM ARCHAEOLOGICAL. Archaeological research has allowed the discovery of numerous ceramic kitchenware and tableware preserved in the castle museum. In the large entrance courtyard, which allows access to the fortress, you can admire three large stone coats of arms, belonged to the noble families who lived there.

Not far from the castle Ruspoli-Candriano we find the MONUMENTAL FOUNTAIN ( XIX century), a work of fine stone workmanship , treated in every detail equipped with 9 square bases in polished stone. Behind the monument it is possible to visit a relative room where the path of water channeling is shown in detail. At about 500 m from this is a charming nineteenth-century mill. Both works testify the massive presence of water streams in the country; no less relevant is the fact that the SOURCES OFANTO , the largest stream of Southern Italy, are located in Torella, in the boiling Fountain.

Another point of interest of great importance is the NORMAN TOWER, dated between the twelfth and twelfth centuries, located in the locality Girifalco, remnant of an ancient site of fortification around which the original village developed. The tower served its defensive function until the first half of the fifteenth century and was then abandoned. The peculiarity of this territory is that it is characterized by numerous streams, counting in fact numerous fountains, located throughout the territory, of particular artistic historical importance and as many streams and springs. Also in Torella is the source of the Ofanto the most important course of high Irpinia if not the entire south of Italy.

The country mainly agricultural boasts the presence of several farms that offer valuable products such as wine, oil, cheese and wheat. As for the social fabric, the life of the country is animated by numerous voluntary associations that are responsible for organizing events of various kinds.
