Macedonio Castle of Grottolella

The Macedonio Castle, also called "Castle of Carafa", is a place of historical interest located in Grottolella, in the historic center of Irpinia.

The ancient medieval fortress, from the top of the hill where it was built to defend the area below, tells the different dominations that, here, have occurred.  Over the centuries it has undergone several restorative and reconstructive interventions, especially in the Swabian-Angevin and late Aragonese.

In 1650, from a stronghold it became a noble residence of the Macedonian dukes and belonged for a period to the Caracciolo family. With the last restoration in 1996, the residential apartments of the current owners were created. Despite the numerous changes made to its structure, the manor still retains its fifteenth-century appearance, rectangular in plan, with external limestone curtain punctuated by rectangular windows and reinforced by four corner towers, three cylindrical and one on a square base.

It allows the entrance to an imposing stone portal of 1690, with frescoed vault. The large central courtyard has a well-cistern and the upper apartments overlook it. On the ground floor there is also the Palatine Chapel, adorned with stucco and valuable frescoes, dating back to 1690, a place of worship until the eighteenth century Architectural symbol of the local community, the Macedonio Castle preserves centuries of history that revive, still, with the same splendor of a time.
