Fragneto is located in the Campania Apennines at the foot of the hill of Toppa Barrata, between the rivers Tammaro and Calore, near the streams Lenta and Raventa. The territory is mainly hilly, but still very fertile. It is at a height that varies from 111 to 530 meters and has an extension of almost 25 km2. It is part of the Zone I seismic classification and is an integral part of the mountain community of Alto Tammaro and the agricultural region n.4 "Colline del Calore Irpino Inferiore".
The name Fragneto dates back to the Fara di Gnito, that is the family (or group) of Gnito, the warrior who, after the conquest of Benevento by the Lombards (571 AD), had settled in this place and made it a fortified village with walls and towers. Other sources claim that "Fragneto" derives from the Latin farneus, a particular type of oak, to which is added the suffix -etum, which indicates, in this case, quercet.
The second name Monforte seems to derive simply from Bartolomeo da Monteforte, one of the first Suffeudatories of the territory where the town rises; however, the specification serves to differentiate Fragneto Monforte from the neighboring Fragneto l'Abate. The hill and the village of Fragneto Monforte, for their happy position and for the presence of the nearby Tratturo, that is the ancient "way for the Puglie", has played an important strategic role for the populations that gradually settled in Sannio: The importance of this position remains a testimony to the traces of occupation, still visible, left over the centuries by Samnites and Romans first, then by Goths, Byzantines and Saracens, and again by Lombards and Normans. In fact, ancient traditional festival.
Between 891 and 894 AD, following the expulsion of the Byzantines from Benevento, some small groups settled in Fragneto: these were skilled merchants and skilled craftsmen who made the small village flourishing and important. Among these were the devotees of Saint Nicholas of Myra, who introduced the cult to Fragneto, along with the custom that the rich gave food masses to a Magister who redistributed them to the poorest and neediest. And even today, in fact, the traditional customs of the Feast of Saint Nicholas, based on the collection and distribution of offerings, are jealously guarded by the Master of Feast and the living and heartfelt observance of the entire community. Since 1970, the folklore research group "La Takkarata" has been located in the Fragnetano area, which, through musical instruments, clothing and folk songs, intends to refer to the nineteenth and twentieth century culture of the inhabitants of the country and surrounding areas.
The group takes its name from a certain "Ballo della taccarata", of nineteenth-century origin, which in turn derives from "tàkkare", a term with which they defined, in ancient times, the olive chopsticks seasoned, which created a suggestive musical rhythm . Typical of the group is also the costume, which has something of Albanian, mixed with oriental, with the many multicolored lace that are used for the dance of the notched. The town shows a particular attachment to religious holidays, which is why the patron saint Saint Nicholas of Bari is celebrated on December 6. Tradition has it that there is a "master of festivity", that is, the bursar, who organizes the ceremonies and preserves the picture bearing the image of the Saint, delivered to him at the beginning of the year; on 25 and 26 November we have the "Mill of St.Nicholas" and, to those who have lent, 5 December is delivered bread, meat and wine. Other religious festivities take place on the occasion of Saint Anne (26 July) and Saint Teresa (there is a sort of fair on 15 October).
On the last Sunday of May, however, there is the feast of the most holy Purity. In via "laica" there are many occasions, especially in the summer, including the fair (which takes place on the last Saturday of May and July 25) and the Summer fragnetana (throughout the month of August). on 25 and 26 November we have the "Macina di S.Nicola" and, to those who have lent, on 5 December is delivered bread, meat and wine. Since 1986 it has been the venue for international hot air balloon rallies, generally in the first week of October. On this occasion along the streets of the village there are numerous food and wine stands, street artists, associations of clowneries, impromptu art exhibitions and you can also experience the aerostatic flight. The more experienced teams launch in various competitions in balloons, whose winners and participants are rewarded by the municipal administration. There are also acrobatic performances of planes and parachutists, as well as performances by bands and brass bands, including the fanfare of the Bersaglieri. The event reached the 34th edition (2022) after 2 years of stop due to COVID-19.
