Guardia Sanframondi (BN) - Campania

The Municipality of Guardia Sanframondi is a town in the province of Benevento, with just under five thousand inhabitants. Located almost two thirds of a high mountain (Toppo Capomandro), it overlooks the Calore river, in the Telesina valley, dominated by its castle and surrounded by narrow streets that break its historic center. Consisting of modest houses and noble residences on which the coats of arms of the important families stand out, it has a peculiar urban structure enclosed by the four gates (Porta Francesca, Porta dell'Olmo, Porta Ratello and Porta di Santo) that delimit the village.

Features that enchanted the illustrious scholar Raffaello Causa, who called Guardia Sanframondi: 'Extraordinary gem of the South'. Representative of the City is the coat of arms that depicts three towers of which one, The central one is surmounted by a griffin holding a stone in a paw, symbol of vigilance. The whole is enclosed in an oval, on which stands a ducal crown.

The Municipality of Guardia Sanframondi boasts an ancient origin; the first artifacts that testify to a human presence in the territory date back, in fact, to the Paleolithic age. Subsequently, numerous human settlements developed over time, leaving traces that can be traced back to the Neolithic Age and the Bronze and Iron Ages. To validate the hypothesis of a Lombard origin there is a document that states that the name of Guardia Sanframondi derives from the family of Sanframondo, which in the twelfth century had feud the town of Cerreto Sannita and surroundings, including Guardia.

The locality thus took the name of Warda, that is a place of guard and lookout possible thanks to the strategic hilly position; so the Sanframondo gave the village a huge castle that allowed the control of the entire valley below. The village experienced a remarkable expansion in 1600, a period of great well-being due to the flourishing tanning activity that gave it the name of 'Guardia delle sole'. This period was followed by the construction and embellishment of important monuments by the greatest artists of the time, including the names of Paolo De Matteis, Domenico Antonio Vaccaro, Paolo Bardellino and Francesco Narici.

In 1688 the Guardiese population was hit by a strong earthquake that destroyed the country, rebuilt in the same place by the survivors with great will and tenacity. After the Sanframondo family, in about 1800, the Carafa (Counts of Cerreto Sannita ) and Guardia became part of the Carafa Superior County. In 1861, with the creation of the Kingdom of Italy, it became a district of the newly formed province of Benevento. Finally, in October 1943, it was bombed by American troops with consequent damage to the roads and buildings causing countless deaths.

In the following years, urban planning projects have involved the redevelopment of wooded areas, located outside the Historical Center, thus causing a slow abandonment and deterioration of the same; abandonment faced by municipal administrations in recent years, with a series of initiatives in the artistic field, aim to give renewed functionality to the medieval village. In fact, there are different experiences and projects realized by local and foreign artists.
