Ponte is located at the entrance of the Telesina Valley, its territory in Roman times was the site of several commercial trades being located along the Via Latina, which put Benevento in communication with Telesia until you get to Rome.
The name of the town derives from a stone bridge built by the Romans on the course of the river Alenta, whose few remains are still visible today.
The territory of Ponte has been the subject of numerous archaeological finds, including a widespread presence of epigraphs, ceramics and coins of Roman times. In 1949 in the locality of Piana di Ponte (Bn) was found a tomb of the VII-VI century B.C. inside which a bronze spearhead and a Samnite fibula dating back to. Today preserved at the Sannio Museum in Benevento. The fibula, in bronze, presents the mobile barb and comes from prototypes of the last Mycenaean age found in Crete and Cyprus. The fibula, as a brooch to anchor the garments behind is of considerable historical and archaeological importance as it denotes the relationship between the Greek and Samnite civilization highlighting the age-old attitude to natural meeting place.
Around the year 1000 the current town was built, surrounded by a castle that in 1087 became the property of Baldwin the Norman, vassal of Count Rainulfo.
In 1266 it was occupied by the troops of Charles I of Anjou before heading to Benevento where he clashed with Manfred of Swabia.
The fief of Ponte then became the property of the Fenucchio, the Sanframondo, the Caracciolo and finally, from 1585, the Sarriano who kept it until the abolition of feudalism occurred in 1806.
In 1829 it lost its autonomy being united to Casalduni and in 1892 it was detached from Casalduni to be joined to Paupisi.
In the second half of the 1800s the Pontesi, following an important demographic increase, began a long struggle for autonomy. The related bill (Act C. 1429 of 7 June 1913), presented and supported in Parliament by the deputies Antonio Venditti and Leonardo Bianchi, obtained a favourable opinion and Ponte could become an autonomous municipality on 22 June 1913.
