Renowned spa resort, Contursi Terme is also a medieval village with a very fascinating history.
Contursi is a town located at an average altitude of 250 m asl, with an area of 28.87 kmq. The town is located on the hill overlooking the valley of Sele. Along the river Sele are the thermal-tourist settlements divided into two poles: cold waters, for mineral and oligomineral bottling, which treat diseases of the digestive tract and urinary tract, regulating blood pressure and liver functions; hot water, for hydroponic and mud therapy treatments. It is possible to carry out complete cycles of therapies to treat osteoarthritis, arthritis, rheumatism etc.
Famous since ever, the waters of Contursi Terme are among the most prodigious, and have given rise to modern spa complexes where you can cure yourself or simply enjoy a healthy holiday. Some tourist places are important: the baths of Contursi, Ponte Mefita, Tufaro, Isca Ferrigno, Saginara, Vulpacchio.
The territory of Contursi has been inhabited since prehistoric times, although the birth of a real urban center took place only after the fall of the Roman Empire.
The story, in fact, tells us that the inhabitants of the hill where Saginara stood, to escape the continuous invasions and destruction by the barbarians and the Saracens, fled to the inland areas building their fortified city and even a castle.
The centre was devastated in 1348 by Luigi d'Angiò Durazzo. It was rebuilt and, a century later, became a fief of the Sanseverino family, prince of Salerno; in this period it was again destroyed, this time by Louis of Hungary, who came to Italy to punish Queen Joan.
Among the various lords who ruled over Contursi we remember, besides the Sanseverino family, the Pepe, the Gesualdo and the Parisano da Tolentino, Marquises of Caggiano who dominated it until the eighteenth century.
