Count Orso, prince of Salerno, had the Lombard castle built in 840. The Castrum has a historical importance: it was built to defend the Castle of Salerno against the Saracens. Today, on the ruins of the Lombard castle stands another building that belongs to the Rosapepe family.
The medieval borough of Contursi is located on the top of the hill, where the locals took refuge to escape the looting of barbarian populations. Of extraordinary historical and archaeological value are the walls that delimited the town with their respective access doors and that have been preserved in an almost intact: Arco della Portella, which opens onto Piazza Garibaldi and Porta S. Giovanni, one of the main access gates of the country.
Walking through the old town you can still feel the medieval atmosphere that marks the past of the village.
The houses all stood around the castle, of which only the lateral perimeter wall is preserved up to the first floor and some cavities.
In addition to the castle, you can see several buildings of artistic and architectural interest such as houses, churches and palaces with impressive portals. For the visit to the village is recommended comfortable clothing.
