A borough split in two and suspended in time, between past and future.

Laviano is a small town in the Salerno hinterland wedged between Lucania and Irpinia, located at 475 m above sea level, in the western and highest part of the Sele River Valley, at the north-western slopes of Mount Eremita (1,579 m above sea level). The municipal territory, characterized by strong variations in altitude, belongs to the southern Apennines and is part of the Marzano - Eremita mountain group, bordered to the west by the middle-high valley of the Sele, north by the river Temete and the highway n. 381, to the east by the river of Muro and the rivers Platano and Bianco, to the south by the plans of Palomonte, Buccino, San Gregorio Magno, Ricigliano.

The municipal territory, of 56 km², includes a predominantly mountainous area whose altitude is between 261 and 1,579 m s.l.m. and falls in the catchment area of the river Sele, on the border with Basilicata characterized by modest valleys and drains in season. The main tributary of the Sele is the Temete, which flows into its waters in Temete. Part of these waters have been collected in the Lucan aqueduct, reducing its flow. Valle delle Conche (12 km) is mainly fed by the source Valle Porcaro; in the past it was possible to swim, with the earthquake the waters have infiltrated the soil and then flow into the Sele.
