Esperia (FR) - Lazio
 

Esperia is a municipality in the province of Frosinone. The resident population is about 3600 inhabitants and is a purely mountain town. By extension it is the third of the province of Frosinone with 108.57 square km and with a density of 32.98 ab. /square km.

 

Esperia is one of the 10 municipalities belonging to the Regional Park Authority of the Aurunci Mountains and it should be stressed that it offers the Protected Area the greatest territory. It is a village consisting of a central area (center of Roccaguglielma and center of San Pietro) that give life to Esperia center and then there is the hamlet of Monticelli di Esperia. There is also the rural area of Badia di Esperia rich in crops of local products.

 

There are many farms that live producing the typical local products of our territory such as marzoline (typical Esperiano cheese cylindrical and made with goat’s milk), oil and olives of Esperia, wine from the area of Monticelli di Esperia and other agricultural products such as pepper, tobacco etc... the latter are mainly produced in the rural area of Badia di Esperia.

 

The emblem of Esperia is the ancient medieval castle that is located on Monte Cecubo about 500 m s. l. m. This was built around 1103 at the behest of the Norman William of Blosseville Another peculiarity of the town of Esperia are the alleys characteristic of the historic centers of the zone of Roccaguglielma, San Pietro and Monticelli di Esperia that every have, especially during the summer and in conjunction with the numerous events, are visited na numerous tourists. Apart from being a mountain village, Esperia has another peculiarity, namely that of having a distance of only 30 km from the sea (Formia Gaeta, the so-called Ulisse Riviera).

 

Another aspect to note is that dinosaur footprints have been found that are the oldest ever discovered in Lazio, there are more than 40 footprints that date back to about 120 - 140 years ago. For this was built an archaeological area with the wall of the footprints of the dinosaurs in San Martino, with an adjoining picnic area where you could stop for a picnic surrounded by nature. There is also an important museum dedicated to one of the characteristics of our territory, namely Carsismo . This museum is located in the Palazzo Storico called 'Palazzo Spinelli' in the historic center of Roccaguglielma.

 

Important is also the network of trails in the protected area of the Aurunci Mountains that annually attracts many lovers of mountain walks thanks to the enormous wealth of biodiversity present both animal and vegetable. Finally, in the mountain area of Via Tasso, a few kilometers from the medieval castle, there is a centuries-old chestnut grove with about 22 plants of Castanea Sativa (Chestnut) with average trunk diameters of 500 /600 cm. Of these plants the municipality has recently applied for inclusion in the Regional and National list of Trees monuments. In short, there is much to discover and visit so it is worth coming to Esperia.
