Sezze is a town of 23,709 inhabitants in the province of Latina in Lazio. In the municipal territory, which extends between the Pontino and the Lepini mountains, the Ufente river rises and flows and the peaks of Monte del Cerro, Monte Forcino, Monte Fulcino and Monte Rotondillo rise.
Traditionally, the Latin name of the city, Setia, is traced back to the deeds of the mythical founder, Hercules. The modern name Sezze continues the Latin form of locative Setiae, but in past centuries was also used the form Sezza, regularly derived from Setia. The name of the inhabitants exists both in the form that continues the Latin, Setini, and in that derived from the modern name, Sezzesi.
According to legend, the mythical founder of the city was Hercules, who arrived in Sezze after winning the Lestrigoni, a population that is supposed to be settled in the lower Lazio, joined with a local virgin giving birth to the Faustus, minor hero of which one has testimony in the apocryphal poetry of the epic cycle. The coat of arms of the city depicts the nemean lion, whose skin Hercules was adorned, holding a cornucopia full of fruits, with around the inscription, in the form of a hexameter leonine in Latin, SETIA PLENA BONIS GERIT ALBI SIGNA LEONIS ("Sezze full of goods bears the banner of the white lion"). The ancient name of the village (Setia) is thus linked to silk (or Saeta), in reference to the bristles of the nemean lion.
The Setino dialect is one of the characteristic dialects of the Lepini Mountains, firmly falling into the group of Italian Median dialects and in the Central-Southern Lazio subgroup.
The Setina economy is fundamentally still based on agriculture, and in particular on seasonal products such as:
• the French artichoke (PGI or "Protected Geographical Indication"), which is harvested at the end of January;
• the Sini broccoletti, which are harvested between January and February;
• the tomatoes;
• the sour cherries of the Lepini Mountains, small cherries with a sour taste;
• the Kiwi Latino, Hayward variant, which you begin to collect in late October.
To these is added the breeding and production of buffalo milk and buffalo mozzarella (the territory of Setino, as part of the province of Latina, is in the PDO areas for this product) and extra virgin olive oil "Latino".
Among the most traditional and renowned economic activities there are also those of craftsmanship, such as processing and the art of iron and embroidery.
Sezze is served by the Rome-Formia-Naples railway. The only station, located in the hamlet of Sezze Scalo, bears the name of Sezze Romano, still in use in the timetables and announcements, with an adjective that was added to differentiate it from that of the then Sezzè, which sometimes creates ambiguity, calling themselves the country simply Sezze.
The station of Sezze has secondary character and is currently equipped with 6 tracks most of which unused, due to the fact that until the sixties was branch station with the lines to Velletri and Priverno, now deleted.
The station will be re-styled during 2023, becoming more modern and digital, more welcoming for visitors and travelers.
