The ancient name "GOLOTZENE" or "GOLOSSANE" appears for the first time in 1341 in a written document of the church, which attests the amount of money contributions that the individual villages paid to finance the wars against the Turks.
Among the 21 villages of the diocese of Ottana, Bolotana was the fourth largest contributor. However, the human presence in its territory dates back to the pre-Nuragic and nuragic period, as revealed by the numerous protonuraghi, nuraghi, domus de janas and some ritual circles. Traces of the Punic civilization and numerous remains of the Roman one have also been found.
The territory of Bolotana extends between the plain and the mountain, passing through the terraced hills.
The pride of the Bolotanese mountain is the territory of Badde Salighes on which stands Villa Piercy, the former home of the English engineer Benjiamin Piercy, who designed and built the Sardinian Railways.
