The mountain center of Barbagia di Ollolai, on the border with Mandrolisai, the village is located on a granite plateau of Monte Orohole, near the artificial lake of Cucchinadorza. The urban core follows a circular path where typical granite houses and narrow cobbled streets give it the appearance of an ancient mountain village. In the historic center stands the church of the patron saint, San Giorgio, built in Aragonese style, with a high eighteenth-century bell tower.
The human presence in the territory has deep roots. Among the archaeological sites of considerable interest, some datable to the pre-Nuragic culture of over five thousand years ago, include the menhirs of Predas Fittas and Domosnovas, the domus de janas of S'abba vo ada and Mancossu, the tombs of the giants of Su Nodu 'and Lopene, the nuraghi of Nieddio, Finonele, Campos and Orohole and the nuragic village of Osseli.
In recent years, the local economy has experienced a remarkable development with particular regard to the pastoral and agricultural sectors, purely traditional, and with a recent affirmation of the agri-food sector, with the artisanal production and marketing of excellent products such as cheese, salami, wines, sweets and carasau bread locally called "Pane 'e Fressa". In addition, the stone sector and the extraction and processing of cork is particularly important.
There are several religious and popular festivals that joyfully involve the whole ovoddese community. The most important are those of the Carnival, which culminates on Ash Wednesday with the burning of a puppet called Don Conte Forru, April 23 the patron saint San Giorgio, the country festival of San Pietro di Oleri of 28, 29 and 30 June that has as background the ancient homonymous church and the traditional pariglie that take place during the second Sunday of July, where expert riders delight the public with spectacular and dangerous horseback stunts.
In all the celebrations are organized dances in the square, songs and tastings of local delicacies, which find particular resonance in the event Autumn in Barbagia "Cortes Apertas" which is a great attraction for tourists and visitors.
On the occasion of the festivities and religious processions the traditional costume of Ovodda makes its appearance, really sumptuous in fabrics and harnesses.
Ovodda is the place of the centenarians. The good air, healthy food, pure water and healthy habits of the people have given the country a world-famous record: longevity. The Municipality in collaboration with the University of Sassari has started a scientific research on longevity with the AKEA project (acronym of "A kent'annos"). Thanks to this researchers from the international scientific world study the territory in search of the elixir of youth to reveal the reasons that make Ovodda one of the few towns with such a large number of centenarians. The uncontaminated environment that surrounds Ovodda has allowed the development of unique lifestyles and high quality agri-food products that still preserve flavors and scents of ancient traditions.
