Small village of about 1150 inhabitants, Zeddiani rises in the northern part of the fertile plain of Campidano, the largest and most important of Sardinia. The territory, totally flat, is placed on a terrace of river sediments on the banks of the river Cispiri and is surrounded by agricultural crops and vineyards that offer renowned products. The hedges of reeds, prickly pears and brambles delimit many of the cultivations that distinguish the territory: the cereal and horticultural production, in which stand out the most important local products, rice and tomato, and the renowned production of Vernaccia, sweet and fragrant DOC wine.
A few kilometers from the capital of the province and the beaches of Sinis, the entire country, with the exception of religious buildings and a few buildings, was originally built in Ladiri, bricks of earth and straw dried in the sun. Even today some of those buildings can be appreciated along the streets of the town.
The nuragic settlements that survive in the surrounding area testify that the area where Zeddiani rises was inhabited for several millennia. Considerable were the influences from the Roman people, who imposed themselves with great force both in the political and economic field. Around 1200 Sardinia was divided into judges that corresponded roughly to today’s provinces. The Court of Arborea, to which Zeddiani belonged, included 13 curators. The cities were few, many instead the villas, which were the most important centers of the curatories. The country, over the centuries, has changed its name several times: Cellayani, Cellevane, Seleiani. All referable to the term cellarium, or warehouse, where the crops of the neighboring villas were gathered. Zeddiani was probably one of the richest and most important villas in Campidano.
The two churches and the Montegranatico are of great architectural interest. The Church of the Madonna delle Grazie, built in the first half of the 13th century in Romanesque style, is located in the heart of the town and is also known as "Chiesa di Sant'Antonio". In the seventeenth century it was almost entirely rebuilt; however, you can still see the typical features of Romanesque architecture. The Parish Church, dedicated to Saint Peter the Apostle and dating back to the seventeenth century, houses ancient and valuable furnishings and a baroque wooden altar with the statue of the Madonna della Neve in polychrome wood, characterized by fine finishes in pure gold. The Montegranatico, built in the nineteenth century, was born as a warehouse for the storage of grain. The sober appearance of the building, carefully restored, still denotes its exclusively functional character, representing a valuable testimony of the rural world. The building, currently used as a gathering space, hosts exhibitions, conferences and other cultural events.
Along the streets and squares you can admire the many murals that adorn the town; beautiful works of art that illustrate scenes of life of the past, made with skill and abundance of details.
To visit, in the immediate outskirts of the country, the important naturalistic oasis located between the Rio Cispiri and the pond of Mare Foghe, natural habitat for many animal species, including the increasingly rare "sultan chicken". It is an oasis that, due to its characteristics, offers extremely suggestive scenarios. The stretch of river that crosses the territory of Zeddiani offers important opportunities also because of the enormous potential in a sporting key. The lake is an ideal area for training and competitions of various sports, and is attracting increasing interest at local, regional and national level. Close to the river, in Località S'Anaedda, a partially equipped municipal area, whose structures allow the descent into the river, is a good base for those who want to practice sports such as canoeing, rowing and fishing.
The traditional Zeddianese cuisine consists mainly of foods of vegetable origin, especially legumes; simple and poor dishes but rich in taste. A great variety instead characterizes the typical confectionery production, with various preparations related to particular periods of the year or religious holidays.
Numerous cultural initiatives and activities of aggregation and socialization that animate the country. An event of primary importance is the traveling and widespread exhibition dedicated to Zia Veronica, the naïve artist who, through her paintings, has told for many years scenes of daily life, landscapes, work and traditions of the country and Sardinia. Every year, for a whole day, Zeddiani turns into an open-air museum to pay tribute to it. The most important religious festivals are those in honor of Saint Anthony of Padua, Saint Isidore, protector of farmers, and Saint Apollonia. On these occasions, in addition to the traditional religious program, there are musical events and food and wine initiatives.
Within the country you can go to public parks, green areas variously equipped where you can spend pleasant time outdoors. The Municipal Park hosts games for children and sports facilities, while the Oasis Park is characterized by the presence of a fitness area and an area sgambamento dogs. The last one is the Park of Via Repubblica.
The historic buildings, the works of art, the murals, the cozy squares, the parks, the nature oasis and the rich confectionery and wine production in the country are an artistic journey, cultural, naturalistic and food and wine that is well suited to be explored and enjoyed by visitors, supported and accompanied by hospitable locals.
