The name comes from the Roman Noa and the Arabic Nouah, it means "flowered garden" because this area has always been particularly fertile, therefore of a beauty that has not many equals. When you arrive in this village we are amazed by its churches and palaces, the old town almost all in stone and the traditions that seem carved in it.
The view is wonderful and as soon as we arrive in this village, before we immerse ourselves in its magic, let’s look behind to see the majestic Rocca Novara (1340 masl) and Rocca Leone (1200 masl) and then in front of the valleys the Aeolian islands . Now we enter the center and enjoy the visit to this little gem starting from the square overlooking the Cathedral consecrated to Santa Maria Assunta dating back to the sixteenth century.
Continuing in the small town, Giriamolo without being in a hurry and enjoying every glimpse that the alleys offer us. The buildings that make up this town, of great variety both in terms of style and at the level of historical eras. From the Middle Ages the church of San Francesco of the thirteenth century to the Baroque Church dell'Annunziata and the Church of Sant'Ugo Abate. There is a high density of interesting churches on the territory, are that of San Nicolò, to reach on top of a stone staircase, of the seventeenth century, the Church of San Giorgio Martire today auditorium, the Church of Sant'Antonio with a spire bell tower and a beautiful portal in Norman style, and the eighteenth-century Riccardo Casalaina Theatre.
In addition to churches, there are beautiful palaces of noble families of the past that give a touch of style to Novara di Sicilia. There is the Palazzo Stancanelli and the Villa Salvo, the Casa Fontana and the Palazzo Salvo Risicato, now home to the Territorial Museum. There are also two abbeys, to visit the first, you have to reach the upper part of the village, the abbey of Santa Maria, dating from the twelfth century and founded by Saint Ugo Abate, to visit the other, you have to move 5 kilometers from Novara, in the village of Badiavecchia, The Abbey of Nuara, known as the first Cistercian building in Sicily.
The town is also enriched with numerous portals, cornices of balconies, capitals, friezes by the "stonemasons", local artists of cutting and working of stone that have given a significant impetus to the artistic development of the country. Numerous religious traditions especially in the summer that culminate with "the Apotheosis of the Assumption" a rite that also ideally report the Novara present at the festival and those scattered around the world; and again the festival of Majorcan in the period of Carnival, that from the '600 makes the villagers delight in a race in which they roll cheese shapes through the narrow streets of the village; a Christmas in the name of tradition with markets, fires and cribs.
Gastronomy is the pride of the country, dishes handed down from mother to daughter and delight the tables especially in festive periods. Among the recipes of the tradition there is pasta ncasciada, with a seasoning of veal ragout and castrato, eggplant, meatballs, breadcrumbs and eggs; lightning and trona, a rusuella, the Maiorchino a hard cheese raw, the provole and ricotta baked.
